Making Prayer a more Natural Part of your Day

Years ago this verse haunted me: “Pray without ceasing.” How was that possible? I had four kids, a full-time job, and most of the household responsibilities.

Pray continually? I barely eeked out an occasional “HELP!”

Then I started walking for my health and praying through my mental lists: my kids, my husband, my job. There was a lot of my-ness in those prayers.

Until I saw that Single Daddy’s Ballet. In the pre-dawn hours in front of the daycare center just blocks away from our Main Street house a young man swooped his blanketed baby girl from the car seat to the daycare lady on the sidewalk. And that little girl said, “Bye, Daddy. Love you.” At that moment I knew God had called me to walk and pray not so much for the my-ness of my prayers but for the needs of others as I walked along. I now pray for whatever God puts within my eyesight. It’s probably not a pray-without-ceasing behavior, but it certainly is a different mindset–on the needs of others as opposed to the my-ness of my mental lists. Featured in Health magazine for her prayerwalking, Janet McHenry is a national speaker and author of the bestselling PrayerWalk and her newest, The Complete Guide to the Prayers of Jesus.
