Tired of Sitting on your Hands?

Years ago I asked the folks at my publishing house if they might consider offering my book PrayerWalk in audiobook form. It made sense to me, as people listen to audiobooks when they walk, and many times I’d been asked if the book was available in that form.

Instead of saying yes, my publisher gave me the rights to produce it in audio myself.

Yikes. I had no idea how to do that. So for three years that permission letter sat on the edge of my desk staring at me. “When?” it seemed to say.

Last year I decided to go for it, and contacted my literary agency for help. Then I created a cover to the right specifications with the help of a former student. And I contacted a recording studio in Reno. However, the day before I was supposed to record the book, the studio got shut down, due to COVID-19.

After inquiring several more times, I decided to stop sitting on my hands. I would do the project on my own. After all, this is a year of #grit— my Word for the Year. And earlier this week with a big GULP, I ordered the equipment I will need to do it right.

Do I know what I’m doing? Ummm, no. But again, I will get the help I need to get me started and will plug along until the job is done. Hopefully I will have PrayerWalk in audio form in online bookstores soon–to celebrate its 20th year.

I hope to reach a new generation of potential prayerwalkers–people who will jump off their treadmills and step out their front doors to pray for the people in their communities–the businesses, the homes, the schools, the government offices, the passersby in cars.

Prayerwalking is life changing. It has changed me physically, emotionally, and spiritually. But I’ve also seen changes for the better in my community–the physical transformation of my town but also the spiritual growth of the faith community.

You may be sitting on your hands in regard to something you KNOW God wants you to do. It may be a hard thing. But God will equip you as you step out and do the challenging work he has asked you to do. Keep #lookingup . . . and live life without regrets.

Janet McHenry is a speaker and author of 24 books–six on prayer, including the bestselling PrayerWalk: Becoming a Woman of Prayer, Discipline and Strength (WaterBrook, 2001). She loves to encourage others to develop a praying lifestyle and to that end has created an online masterclass called Prayer School. You can find out more about it at prayerschool.teachable.com.
