When you Just want to Give Up

It’s interesting to me that the prophet Jeremiah must have been a young man when God called him to be his spokesman.

This was not a call Jeremiah wanted. In fact, he said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.”

God’s response was gentle and reassuring. Essentially, he said:

– “You can speak to anyone, no matter the age.”

– “I will give you the words to say.”

– “Don’t be afraid of anyone–I will be with you and will protect you.”

Perhaps the nature of a calling is that God raises up someone completely unequipped and not necessarily gifted at all and then gives him the ability, reassurance, and courage to step forward in that calling. As a result others are drawn to God, rather than to a flashy personality.

However, today, my response might be the opposite to that of Jeremiah: “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak/write, for I am an older person now. I don’t have the flash and style and wrinkle-free face of a younger person.”

And what might I guess would be God’s response?

– “You can speak/write to anyone, no matter the age.”

– “I will give you the words to say/write.”

– “Don’t be afraid of anyone–I will be with you and will protect your heart.”

As Rick Warren has said, “There’s no such thing as being uncalled.”

Remember that, my friends, when you are tempted to fade into the woodwork.
